Last few Weeks of PE

Last few weeks of PE have included basketball and kickball activities. We have been learning about the sports and skills within each. As we move forward and get closer to summer the weather has allowed for more outside activities. In the coming weeks students in 3-5th grade will have their end of the year fitness testing as well. I still have a lot of activities I want to do, but so little time to fit everything in!

Jump Rope for Heart- Final Count

We finished up our Jump for Heart program last week and received the end of our donations on Monday. After all the money was counted our school ended up raising $8,080! It was excellent to see so many kids participate in the event as we had over 200 students bring in donations. Everyone participated in this event with enthusiasm and lots of energy. This was a fun couple of weeks and all of the money raised goes to the American Heart Association to help fight heart disease. Students that raised money earned thank you prizes for all of their hard work. Those prizes should be coming within the next few weeks and will be distributed in P.E class.

Once again, thanks for all of the help and support from the Badger family!

Pe in the classroom

With the 1st grade Patriotic Program happening this morning in the gym, we had PE in the classroom. Some of the things we have been doing during our classroom PE include logging activity minutes into the Fitness Gram program and Speed Stacking. Kids doing the Speed Stacking have the options of trying competitive stacks to see how fast they are, stacking with partners or making different shapes and designs with the cups. It amazes me to see all of the creative stacks the kids come up with and it seems like there is a different one every class.

Here is a massive stack that some students in Mrs. Hughes 5th grade class worked together in building:

Jump Rope For Heart

We have started our Jump Rope For Heart event and it will be taking place over the next two weeks. This week kicks off the event where students are being introduced to why we do Jump Rope For Heart and how they can help the cause. Each student will receive a packet to go home if they want to try and collect donations for the event. Every donation goes to the American Heart Association for research and helping those with heart problems.

If you want to join our team online here is the online link:

Fitnessgram and Activitygram

Badger Mountain Elementary purchased an online program called Fitnessgram and Activitygram for PE. This is an online program that students can go on the computer and track their activity through Activitygram. I have been tracking scores of Fitness tests through Fitnessgram and students can see their reports online as well.

How it works-

Basically, each student has their own user ID and password so they can log their own activity. Students can set various goals for themselves, they can log something as simple as minutes of activity a day or can go through and log hour by hour the type of activities they take part in. Older students also have the option of accessing fitness test scores to see where they are in relation to healthy fitness zones and what they can do to improve in the various fitness areas- flexibility, muscular strength, aerobic capacity and muscular endurance.

I will be sending home information on the program as well as each students user name and password.
For more information you can go to the Fitnessgram site- http://www.fitnessgram.net/faqs/what-is-fitnessgram

This is the site for online login- https://www.fgontheweb.com/RICHLANDSDWA/login.aspx

Hockey

This week I am introducing basic Hockey skills (Dribbling, passing and shooting) and letting the students go through stations to work on those skills. It has been fun to see students improve as they go from station to station.

Thanks PTO!

Thanks PTO for getting a Speed Stacks kit for Badger Mountain Elementary. We have been using the Speed Stacks all week in 1st-5th grade classes. The younger students learned a new Speed Stacking game and the older students got to use the mats and timers to see how fast they were at the 3-3-3 stack.

Dance Dance Revolution

This week the 3rd-5th grade students have been playing the Dance Dance Revolution game. DDR is a form of active gaming that helps students match their body movements with the rhythm of the music. We have dance pads and students try to step on different arrows that come across the screen by moving their bodies around the pads. Our school has four metal dance pads that link directly to the Wii gaming system so students can track scores and we have 12 practice pads so partners can practice while watching the screen.

As classes come into P.E this week, I have been giving those interested in purchasing, flyers with instructions on how to order.

If you are interested you can go to www.speedstacks.com/go and fill in the information to find our school and browse equipment available.
